Michael Kirwin passing

With heavy hearts we share the passing of Sifu Michael Kirwin, friend and Board member of the Canadian Taijiquan Federation.

Michael was chief instructor at Headwaters School of Tai Chi in Orangeville, Ontario, which he founded in 2010.  He had studied Tai Chi for over 20 years, including a number of years studying with wushu master Ting Seng Hung.  Michael was proficient in Yang style as well as spear, sword and push hands forms.

As a member of the Board, Michael focussed on engaging membership and attracting people to tai chi for health and wellness.  He supported the outreach activities of World Tai Chi & Qigong Day, held in April each year.

Michael taught drama and English at the Peel Board of Education for 26 years.  These skills made him an engaging and playful teacher of tai chi.  He presented on Play in Taiji at the inaugural CTF Symposium in September 2017. He shared strategies for teaching new students with his booklet on the principles of Taiji.

This short video shows Michael in action with his club.

Michael will be sorely missed by his students and colleagues alike.

Michael was 71 years old.
